Stormwater Network Inspection and Condition Assessment

Scope

A regional council in northern New South Wales required a comprehensive inspection and condition assessment of its stormwater network to strengthen flood mitigation planning and inform future maintenance priorities.
The project was jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). TDG Environmental was engaged to capture data across two townships using advanced CCTV technology, and store this data in our UtilityTrack cloud based analytical platform. We then undertook a hydrological analysis of the network to enhance councils network understanding and performance visibility.

Services Provided

  • Stormwater CCTV Inspection and Pit Assessments: Across both townships, TDG Environmental completed CCTV inspections of 18.6 kilometres of stormwater pipes and culverts and assessed 594 pits and headwalls, providing a complete view of network condition and performance.
  • Hydrological Efficiency Review: Delivered in collaboration with Northrop Consulting Engineers, identifying flow efficiency issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Digital Asset Capture: Comprehensive condition and location data stored in UtilityTrack resulted in advanced analysis and insights to support proactive asset management.

Challenges

  • Regional Access & Logistics: Remote project locations required precise planning for crew movements, equipment transport, and scheduling.
  • Infrastructure Variability: Aged and variable stormwater assets required adaptive inspection techniques to ensure accuracy.
  • Data Integration: Ensuring compatibility with asset management and GIS platforms demanded rigorous validation and formatting processes.

The outcome

TDG Environmental successfully delivered a comprehensive stormwater condition assessment program and hydrological analysis – informing council of risks which were then integrated into flood resilience planning.
Through collaboration, technical precision, and efficient project execution, the team provided the council with a robust foundation for long-term infrastructure management and improved network performance.
