Scope

A severe sewer blockage obstructed 99% of a 1075mm diameter pipe located 30 metres underground, requiring urgent and complex intervention over a 2.5-week period.

Services Provided

  • Rapid Response: We mobilised 3 combo units and a CCTV van within an hour of receiving the call.
  • CCTV Inspections: Utilised advanced CCTV technology to accurately assess the blockage.
  • High-Pressure Water Jetting (HPWJ): Employed to break up and clear the obstruction.
  • Confined Space Entry: Implemented deep man entry protocols with all necessary safety equipment to access the blocked section.
  • Manual Handling and Labour: Our operators worked tirelessly around the clock to address the issue.

Challenges

  • Complex Blockage: The obstruction was nearly 1 metre in diameter and extended 10-15 metres, consisting of food scraps, medical waste, rags, and fats.
  • Location: The pipe’s depth and length (30 metres underground and 90 metres along the O-void) made access and clearance challenging.
  • Dynamic Work Environment: Required constant updates and adjustments to equipment, operator numbers, and work schedules to adapt to evolving conditions.
  • Safety Protocols: Collaborated closely with the Utilities Client’s Health and Safety team to maintain the highest safety standards.

The outcome

The successful clearance of the blockage ensured the continued functionality of the sewer system, preventing potential overflows and maintaining sanitation standards for the community. This project highlighted our team’s capability to tackle extreme challenges through effective coordination, advanced technology, and relentless effort.
