Scope

A regional road in South Australia required urgent structural repairs after a large sinkhole developed above three 1800mm culverts beneath the roadway, a key route for grain haulage.
TDG Environmental was engaged to inspect the culverts and deliver an in-situ repair solution that would restore structural integrity without requiring full road closure or culvert replacement. The project involved installing internal structural patches, repairing defective joints, and ensuring the long-term stability of the roadway.

Services Provided

  • Pre-Culvert Cleaning: Comprehensive cleaning and preparation of all three 1800mm culverts prior to repair.
  • Structural Patching & Repair Works: Installation of nine 1800mm internal patches, plus mortar repairs to four additional joints.
  • End-to-End Project Delivery: Planning, coordination, on-site execution, and project handover completed within a five-day program.

Challenges

  • Extremely large and heavy packers required a six-person team for handling and installation
  • Weather-dependent curing times created narrow working windows
  • Works conducted beneath an active road with live traffic above
  • Remote location required the crew to stay on-site throughout the project

The outcome

TDG Environmental successfully installed nine 1800mm patches and completed four mortar repairs with a day to spare.
All works passed inspection with no failures or rectification required, and the project received strong feedback for safety, planning, and delivery.
By completing these repairs in situ, TDG enabled continued road access and prevented the need for costly culvert replacement, supporting asset longevity while minimising community and traffic disruption.
