Scope

Bunya Street Pump Station is the largest pump station in Brisbane, handling all waste from the S1 trunk main.

As part of rehabilitation works on upstream assets TDG was tasked with cleaning out debris from a 1500mm to allow relining and replacement of sewer door.

Challenges

  • Wet well 20m deep
  • Cleaning Unit had to be positioned outside of pump station due to access restrictions
  • Cleaning nozzle had to be winched into position from upstream manhole as target line branched off main line with no direct access
  • Large exhaust fans had to remain online which required specialised hearing protection
  • Co-ordination with multipole other contractors performing different tasks along the same network.

The outcome

TDG’s crew was able to complete all cleaning works in one night including setting up and decommissioning of all hoses, remote jetting reel etc.

Mechanical means was used to assist in the lowering of vacuum pipe into the wet well drastically reducing the chance of manual handling injuries.

Following the success of the noise cancelling headphone TDG is undertaking a feasibility study to assets the validity of equipping all cleaning crews with the technology.
