Scope

A tidal channel in Sydney required the removal of asbestos-contaminated sediment to restore environmental safety and site integrity. The site presented complex conditions including limited access, tidal fluctuations, and a 1.4km haul route from the entry point. TDG Environmental was engaged by the client to deliver a compliant and efficient solution for safe waste removal, stockpile management, and site rehabilitation within a restricted tidal environment.

Services Provided

  • Site Establishment and Compliance Setup: Full compound setup including asbestos controls (air monitoring, fencing, and signage), a decontamination chamber, and plant washdown facilities.
  • Specialised Plant Deployment:
Use of Spider Excavator and Marooka Tracked Dumpers for effective sediment removal in tidal conditions, supported by articulated dump trucks, front-end loaders, and a skid steer.
  • Sediment Removal and Dewatering:
Excavation, transport, and dewatering of asbestos-contaminated sediment across a 1.4km access route, totalling 905 tonnes of waste removed.
  • Weather and Site Management:
Adaptive work scheduling around tidal impacts, proactive relocation of waste stockpiles to prevent flooding, and reinstatement of capped access zones.
  • Site Decontamination and Demobilisation:
Final cleanup completed using a Combination Jet Vac. All machinery and site areas were fully decontaminated and certified for clearance before demobilisation.

Challenges

  • Tidal Constraints: Variable water levels restricted daily work windows and required constant schedule adjustments.
  • Remote Access: 1.4km distance from entry point limited haul cycles and increased turnaround times.
  • Specialised Equipment Availability: Required rapid sourcing of suitable tracked dumpers to meet site demands.
  • Adverse Weather: Rainfall and water level rise caused temporary halts, requiring flexible rescheduling.

The outcome

TDG Environmental successfully removed 905 tonnes of contaminated sediment, achieving full site remediation and clearance certification. The project was completed without safety incidents, flooding, or environmental breaches. Through proactive planning, equipment innovation, and rigorous compliance measures, TDG delivered a safe and sustainable remediation outcome that restored the site’s environmental condition within tight logistical and tidal constraints.
